Now that the Euro Cup is over, it’s time to hand out the awards! Who was the best goal scorer of the tournament? Was it the legendary Italian striker Mario Balotelli? Was it the Greek power forward Giorgos Katidis? Maybe it was the young Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic? No, it was none of these. It was a robot!
The organizers of the UEFA Euro soccer tournament, which kicks off on Friday, posted the news on their official website that the best goal-scorer of the championship would receive a prize from Gazprom, a major sponsor of the tournament. The player who scores the most goals during the tournament will not receive cash but a limited edition FC Barcelona-themed NFT (non-fungible token) trophy of his likeness as a reward for his outstanding performance.
One of the most prestigious trophies in all of Europe is going to be awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the European Championship soccer tournament. And one of the most prestigious sponsors of the event is the Russian energy and gas giant Gazprom, which has offered to give that trophy to the best striker in the competition in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) in the Ethereum-based blockchain game CryptoKitties.. UEFA and Gazprom award best goal of Euro 2020
This unique prize is awarded as part of a sponsorship agreement with the Russian energy giant, which UEFA and Gazprom recently extended for a further three years. The contract covers two European national football team finals and the Champions League, the most prestigious tournament for professional clubs in Europe. The inedible token (NFT) will be an original work of art by a famous Russian artist, which will be created in the St. Petersburg Fanzone. Russia’s second-largest city will play host to seven of the 51 Euro 2020 matches in a dozen different European cities. Last year the tournament was postponed due to the Covid 19 crisis, but retained its original name. The organizers plan to destroy the physical work, but the fragment will be kept and given to the winner of the best lens. The artwork will be scanned into a 3D animated video that will serve as the basis for the creation of the NFT coin, Gazprom said in a statement quoted by the Associated Press. The name of the tournament, the names of the players and the core values of the Football for Friendship program will be encoded in the NFT, the company said.
The winner will be presented with the NFT award at UEFA Headquarters
Euro 2020 will take place this year from 11 June to 11. July with the participation of 24 national football teams. The matches will be played in 11 cities in 11 UEFA countries to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the pan-European football competition. The tournament begins with a match between Italy and Turkey at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, while the final will be played at the legendary Wembley Stadium in London. The winner of the NFT trophy will be invited to UEFA’s headquarters in Switzerland after the tournament to receive the digital trophy. With UEFA awarding the league’s top scorer for the first time, the organisation is still considering the criteria it will use to judge the contenders. The trophy will be delivered via a hardware crypto-currency wallet, Gazprom said. UEFA and Gazprom have extended their partnership to include the Euro 2024 competition. The agreement also extends to the UEFA Champions League, where the European Football Association has worked with the Russian energy monopoly since 2012. According to sports newspapers, Gazprom owns the sponsorship rights for the UEFA Super Cup, the final of the Futsal Champions League and the final of the UEFA Youth League.
